Advanced Placement Courses:
Advanced Placement Courses are college level courses taught at the high school level and tested nationally each year in May. Students who pass the course and the exam receive a GPA bonus for both their high school and college GPAs as well as credit for a number of college courses. The Advanced Placement Program at our school is considered an integral part of our academic success. We administer one of the largest number of AP exams in the District and have one of the consistently highest passing rates for our students. Last year we administered allmost 1000 AP exams in the two-week testing period in the beginning of May.
Students are eligible to begin taking AP courses in their 10th grade year with Advanced Placement Biology and Advanced Placement World History. In the student’s 11th and 12th grade years, they have twenty some additional Advanced Placement courses from which to choose. Students interested in taking an AP course should consult their counselor. All students taking an AP course are required to sign an AP contract that sets up certain conditions and requirements.
The operative paragraphs of this contract are reprinted below for students and parents to review:
POLICY
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are rigorous two-semester college level courses designed for students eligible for honors level instruction. It is expected that students enrolled are committed to extensive work in a selected field and will devote the necessary time and effort to prepare for the AP exam. The AP exams are given in May and cost approximately $82 each. Fee reductions at $13 per exam are available for those who qualify based upon a financial need using the most current income tax return.
The Advanced Placement courses are designed specifically to prepare you to take the Advanced Placement exam in May. The school and the course instructor both expect that when you sign up for an AP course, in addition to your regular class attendance, you may be required to attend sessions held after school and/or on weekends prior to the exam(s). It is further expected that you fully intend to take the AP exam in May. This applies to seniors as well. Be aware that the teacher of an AP course may require or incorporate your taking of the AP exam as a component of your class grade. Failure to take an AP exam may additionally reflect negatively on university applications when they see a student registered for an AP class and not taking the AP exam.
