CODE OF CONDUCT


Van Nuys High School Students take pride in displaying positive behavior by:


  • Attendingschool every day and being on time to all classes.
  • Treating others and themselves with respect and dignity.
  • Reporting problems to the Deans or an Administrator.
  • Giving teachers their full cooperation at all times and working to the best of their ability.
  • Keeping our campus clean by disposing litter properly.
  • Taking careof their books and school equipment.
  • Obtaining a proper Hall Pass when out of class for any reason.
  • Following the school Dress Code posted in every classroom.
Van Nuys High School Students are not allowed to:


  • Use any electronic device ( IPODs, CD players, cell phones/cameras etc.) inside any classroom. This is LAUSD policy, Bulletin 1086 that further states that "any such device shall remain "off" and stored in a locker, backpack, purse, pocket, or other place where it is not visible". These items may be used during lunch and nutrition only.
  • Possess cigarettes, matches, lighters, spray paint or markers, fireworks, replica firearm, alcohol or drugs.
  • Violate our Van Nuys High School Dress Code that is posted in every classroom. Important items to avoid are: Clothing associated with gangs or any other non-school club or group, oversized pants or pants worn below the hips, long shorts with high socks, bandannas, revealing or provocative clothing such as bare-midriff blouses, tank tops, very short shorts or skirts, non VNHS hats, rags, or heavy chains.
  • Defy any valid adult authority on campus.
  • Create a school disturbance.
  • Engage in overly affectionate displays such as prolonged hugging and kissing.
  • Leave class without a pass.
  • Fail to serve detention.
  • Make statements that are threatening sexist, racist, profane or vulgar.
  • Participate in activities involving vandalism, fighting, stealing, possession of stolen goods, gambling, truancy, weapons, selling drugs or causing bodily harm to another individual.
Consequences:
Students are subject to disciplinary action when they violate school rules while on school grounds, while going to or coming from school, during lunch period, whether on or off campus and during, or while going to or coming from, a school sponsored activity.


Van Nuys High School employs the progressive discipline approach to hold all students accountable for their misbehavior. Students who violate our rules are subject to lunch and/or after school detention, in-school suspension, community service, mandatory parent conference, at home suspension, opportunity transfer to another school or expulsion from the school district. All banned items will be confiscated by the Deans Office and returned to a parent or guardian.
