Tardy and truant students are a disruption to the positive learning environment at Van Nuys High School. The following policy and procedures will be implemented on Monday October 30, 2006 :

  1. Mr. Parodi will be the dean for truant and tardy students.
  2. The South Café classroom area will serve as the tardy/truant room.
  3. Students that are not in class after the passing period tardy bell for periods 2,3,4 and 5 will be escorted to the South Café classroom. There will be a grace period of 1 to 2 minutes to allow teachers the option of accepting late arriving students if they wish to do so. Teachers may also elect to lock students out at the tardy bell during periods 2,3,4 & 5 if that is their preference.
  4. Campus Aides on duty in the quad, Deans and Administrative staff will assist the Attendance/Tardy Dean with the gathering of students.
  5. Students will be processed at the South Café classroom and sent to class after processing.
  6. Due to the classroom assignments of Mr. Parodi THE TARDY ROOM WILL NOT BE IN OPERATION PERIODS ONE AND SIX.
  7. Teachers may request that the deans issue detention to those students habitually tardy to periods one and six. PLEASE DO NOT LOCK STUDENTS OUT OF CLASS PERIODS ONE AND SIX AS THERE ISN’T A PLACE FOR THEM TO GO AND IT ONLY COMPOUNDS THE ROAMING PROBLEM FOR THE REST OF OUR STAFF.
The following procedures will be implemented to address the habitually tardy student:

  1. Students will initiate action on their third contact with the Attendance/Tardy Dean (ATD). Students will be given lunch detention and a letter will be mailed home informing their parents of this action.  Students that arrive at your class tardy should be sent to the South Café classroom for processing.  Teachers will have the discretion to excuse the tardy and/or apply their own consequences. Only those students picked up by the sweep teams will make contact with the ATD. Once we get a handle on the tardy problem we will re-evaluate the tardy reporting process.
  2. The ATD will assign the student to lunch and after-school detention in the South Café classroom on their fourth contact.
  3. The ATD will mail home a notice of detention and assign two days of lunch and after-school detention on the fifth contact.
  4. The ATD will issue a week of lunch detention and phone home on the sixth contact. A weekly attendance/tardy check will also be issued to the student for teacher verification on attendance and tardies.
  5. The ATD will contact the parent by phone and request a parent conference with the seventh contact.
  6. The ATD will issue one week of lunch and one week of after-school detention with the ninth contact.
  7. The ATD will suspend the student for defiance of school rules on the tenth contact with a parent conference required.
  8. The student will be referred to the Discipline Dean, Mr. Cordero or Mr. Stafford for continued action on all subsequent violations.
